The Level 1 course is intended for the introductory student, as a refresher for more experienced backcountry travelers, and for the recreational backcountry leader.  The sole prerequisite is the equipment and physical condition to travel in the backcountry on a 3-mile long day tour. Snowshoe, ski, and snowboard travel welcome.

Expect to develop solid grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a winter backcountry trip in avalanche terrain.  Topics include introduction to the avalanche phenomena, planning and preparing for travel in avalanche country, recognizing avalanche terrain, "key" observations, decision making, route finding, travel techniques, the 'human' factor, companion rescue skills and practice. Field time is at least 15 hours of this 24-hour course.
