This course provides important skills for the introductory student, the recreational backcountry leader, and the backcountry party member.  The only prerequisite is you must have the equipment and physical condition to travel in the backcountry on a day tour.

You can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a winter backcountry trip in avalanche terrain.  Topics include introduction to the avalanche phenomena, planning and preparing for a travel in avalanche terrain, recognizing avalanche terrain, "red flag" observations, making decisions, route finding, travel techniques, 'human' factors, and companion rescue skills and practice.
